Eliel Hindert
Tell me about your history. Where you grew up? How you started skiing and what led you to move to Whistler?
Born is Salt Lake City, Utah and my parents had me on skis by the time I was two years old. Despite being on snow from that age I never got on a pair of downhill skis until I was about 12 years old, instead going from cross-country to snowboarding and finally to tele-skiing.
From there it was just an upbringing of riding with friends around Utah all throughout my childhood.
My parents would like to say I came to Whistler because I was at school at UBC, but in reality I came to UBC because it was near Whistler. Now with my third year up here I finally am finding the time to pursue skiing full-time during the winter. Whistler just always had the draw of being a part of the awesome-ness that are the mountains of British Columbia.
How old are you?
20 years and still made of rubber.
What influences your skiing?
Wow, lots.
My biggest influence comes from my friends I grew up riding with and still get lucky enough to ride with today. This includes most of the DinoBots crew, the Sunday Shred Posse, and anyone who I’ve gotten to ride with over the past eight years.
Also heavily influenced by snowboarders like Jake Blauvelt, Pat Moore, John Jackson, and Gigi Ruf. Skiers like Charley Ager, Sean Petit, and Pep Fujas just to name a few. Also draw inspiration and ideas from surfing, skating, and pretty much anything else that has a focus on creativity and self-expression.
Do you get paid to ski?
That would be nice.
What’s your “other” or “real” job?
Work for Exum Mountain Guides as a porter and guide in the summer, as well as working at North Shore Ski and Board in the fall, and lucky enough to work informally for Surface Ski Collaboration in the winter. Also a student but defiantly not getting paid to do that.
Other passions in life?
Surfing, climbing, skateboarding, writing, drawing, and generally just living and loving every part of life possible.
Any nicknames?
“L”, “E”, Big L, Helliel, Smelliel, and an infinite list of mispronunciations of my name.
Tell me about something that defines who you are besides skiing?
Hard question. I’d have to simply say that finding what I love to do and pursuing that as a life. Passion is really what defines who I am.
Sponsors?
Surface Skis, Orage Outerwear, Smith Optics, Levitation Project, and North Shore Ski and Board. Also get some solid love from Swany, and Joystick Poles.
Any closing remarks, thoughts, philosophies?
Go Shred!
